G13, National Letters Ambroise Johnson Z-88 “As discussed during our Swiss Annual Meeting, please find below the submission allowing a National Flag to be displayed at the bottom edge of our sails. The proposal allows the sailors to display their Nation Flag in addition to the National Letters by adding at the end of the article
G.13 the following text: ‘ A national flag with a maximum size of 567 x 337 mm may be applied to both sides of the mainsail such that the aft edge of the flag is 100 mm from the leech and located between the lower and the second batten pockets. The flag shall not touch the race numbers. The flag shall be printed on separate material applied to the sail. The national flag shall correspond to the national letters.’
This text is largely inspired from the ILCA (Laser) Class Rules 4.h and of the definition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_flag. Considering that we sail boats, one may argue that this would be an ensign rather than a flag.I hope you can answer in a few days to complete our task.
I checked the minutes of the meeting and it says:
l. Sail flag sticker: Answering the submission of letters to the board by Ambroise Johnson (»» See Appendix 21) after a brief discussion the NSM agreed by a by majority vote (Yes:19, No:0, Abstentions:1) to submit the proposed changes of Official Specification for Class Vote Procedure and ask the Author to work with the TC on wording (maximum height 10 cm/4 inches and to be placed between the boom and the first batten, not obligatory)
I dont completely recall and understand the request (if it was?) about 100 mm high. The proposal of Ambroise has a reasonable size of about 500×300. Otherwise, it is not visible at all. 10 cm hight I think is good for nothing.
The placement probably is for better visibility on close up pictures with the skipper in sailing position. Still the size is too small.
National flag presentation is a more colorful addition to racing, which would increase the visible enjoyment of following the course of the race.
I would support the original proposal regarding the size with the modification to place the flag between the boom and the lowest batten.
I would use the flag personally.
here is latest draft which should be inclusive of the swiss who have been doing this prior. This also addresses location interference with the different style(placement) of sail numbers and country codes

my own opinion as with some would prefer that they be located below lowest batten and possible grandfather existing sails prior to date-say July 1st ,2020

I agree with the last wording. Keep it below the lower batten so interference with numbers will never be a problem.
